total workers in the technical entrepreneurial sector in the Kingdom, according
to unofficial figures.
The figure appeared in a report on Sunday, at the
conclusion of a regional symposium on women business owners, organized by the

The report said that encouraging women to engage in
IT, which has for long been considered a male-dominated sector, will lead to
their economic empowerment as it will provide them with a source of income that
helps raise the family income.
Women play an active role in the IT sector, where
they hold about a third of the jobs, and this makes their share of leadership
jobs good when compared to other economic activities in the Kingdom, according
to the report.
The report showed that women working in the clothing
industry make up 73 percent of the labor force, but suffer from weak access to
financial services compared to men.
It added that the largest number of individual
enterprises owned by businesswomen is in the food sector.
The report recommended providing incentives and
technical support for companies and institutions that employ certain
percentages of women, especially in promising sectors and non-traditional work
fields. It called for reducing the burden of unpaid work done by women, and
providing employment opportunities in the formal economy, to ensure legal
protection for women workers.
The report also called for lending support to women
entrepreneurs and business owners, especially in micro, small and medium
businesses.
It suggested providing innovative funds and sources
of financing that respond to the needs of women, including enabling women to
access development and commercial banks, financial support funds, investors,
business associations in the private sector, and donors.
Secretary-General of the National Committee for
Women’s Affairs Salma Al-Nims said that participation of women in the labor
force stands at 14 percent, and the unemployment rate among women at the end of
last year was 30.7 percent, compared to 21.4 percent among men, while the
percentage of women university graduates reached 53 percent.
