Janet Al-Tayeb, SSC director of the research
department, said that “supporting and motivating Jordanian women’s
participation in economic activities is achieved through enabling a conducive
and welcoming work environment, as well as providing protection through the
social security system and guaranteeing fair wages.”
Tayeb noted that maternity insurance was added to
the social security system in January 2011, and has contributed to increasing
the participation of women in the private sector. She added that every working
woman covered by the social security system can benefit from the care program,
which pays out allowances for both nursery care and childcare at home.
Tayeb had presented her working paper on women’s participation
at a conference organized by the
UN Commission on the Status of Women. The
conference, titled “We Hear You: How to Strengthen Women’s Economic
Participation,” hosted representatives from civil society, the Ministry of
Labor, and the National Commission for Women.
The conference sought to shed light on the untapped
potential of women in non-traditional sectors, and strengthen their
participation in the labor market.
