According to the annual monitoring report on labor protests
in Jordan, published by the Jordanian Labor Observatory of the Phenix Center
for Economic and Informatics Studies, the decline in protests can be primarily
attributed to the lack of commitment shown by employers in addressing the
demands put forth by workers.
Fear of dismissalThe report further revealed that the fear of job
termination, coupled with pressure exerted on protesting workers and the lure
of promises to meet their demands, led many individuals to withdraw from
participating in protests.
The report presented an in-depth economic and social
analysis of all labor protests that occurred in Jordan throughout 2022. The
observatory closely monitored and documented these demonstrations, engaging in
direct communication with protesters to understand their grievances and analyze
the media coverage surrounding their actions.
The report put forward a range of recommendations to address
the underlying issues. It emphasized the importance of implementing the
principles and standards of decent work, as well as the fundamental principles and
rights in the workplace, extending these protections to all wage earners.
Furthermore, the report stressed the need to reconsider wage
policies to align them with living standards.
Enhancing labor market oversightAnother crucial recommendation highlighted the necessity of
enhancing the effectiveness of labor market inspections conducted by the
Ministry of Labor.
By ensuring robust enforcement of the Labor Law, these
inspections can help prevent abuses and ensure compliance with regulations.
The report also emphasized the importance of strengthening
labor legislation enforcement to put an end to various forms of exploitation
and mistreatment within the workforce.
