However, despite such efforts, statistics released by the
Public Security Directorate paint a grim picture of the country's road safety
situation.
According to the statistics, there were 161,511 traffic
accidents in Jordan, resulting in the death of 643 people and injuring 17,013 others.
These accidents incurred a financial cost of JD324 million.
Following traffic rules
In light of these figures, the police directorate is sending
out a message under the slogan "Traffic rules, civilized
behavior…commitment to traffic rules is sophistication and civilization."
This message aims to encourage Jordanian drivers to adjust
their behavior on the roads and abide by traffic rules, thereby reducing the
number of traffic accidents.
International Traffic Day was first approved by the Geneva
Conference in 1969 and adopted by the League of Arab States in 1972.
The event is celebrated globally to raise awareness of the
need for safe driving and to reduce the number of deadly car accidents on
highways.
