In a post on X Friday evening, Petro tagged Trump’s account and emphasized that an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is urgently needed.

Petro stressed that if Trump were to make an effort, it could help save the lives of both Palestinians and Israeli hostages in Gaza.

He added, “As the President of Colombia, I ask you (Trump) to take action to save the lives of Palestinians and Israeli hostages. If you demand a ceasefire in Palestine, it can happen—and I will support you in this effort.”

On May 3, 2024, Petro announced that Colombia had severed diplomatic ties with Israel over its ongoing attacks on the Palestinian people in Gaza.

In a statement on March 30, he said, “Once (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu is gone, we will restore relations with Israel. Netanyahu will pay for his actions in history—as a child killer.”

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with full U.S. support, has been carrying out what has been described as genocide in Gaza, resulting in over 166,000 Palestinian casualties, including dead and wounded—most of them women and children—as well as more than 11,000 missing persons.
