The local authorities responsible for the North Sea and English Channel region stated that 15 people were rescued and brought back to shore at the port of Gravelines near Dunkirk.
Both the British and French governments have made handling the issue of migrants crossing the English Channel illegally a top priority. Migrants often attempt to cross the waterway in dangerous conditions using small boats or dinghies.
Data from January showed that the UK government had deported 16,400 illegal migrants since taking office in July, the highest rate since 2018. However, political opponents from the ruling Labour Party argue that the government needs to make more efforts in this regard.
