A powerful earthquake shook buildings in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, prompting residents to rush out of buildings at the moment the quake hit.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale and struck the Silivri district in northern Istanbul at 12:49 p.m. local time.

Meanwhile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) also confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.2, stating that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Residents of Istanbul and nearby provinces felt the tremor, which lasted between 10 to 15 seconds and caused widespread panic throughout the city.

Turkey’s Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced that the disaster authority has launched field assessments in coordination with relevant institutions to evaluate the aftermath of the earthquake.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage.
