In a statement issued on his behalf, Guterres also welcomed the announcement that Presidents Trump and Zelensky agreed on a partial ceasefire in the energy sector, and that technical teams would discuss expanding the ceasefire to include the Black Sea.

Guterres stated that these steps represent significant confidence-building measures that would facilitate further discussions among all parties involved, aimed at de-escalating the war. He expressed hope that this would pave the way for achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace that fully respects Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The Secretary-General added that an agreement on safe and free navigation in the Black Sea, along with security commitments in line with the UN Charter and international law, would make a crucial contribution to global food security and supply chains. He emphasized the importance of trade routes from both Ukraine and the Russian Federation to global markets.

Guterres also noted that he has "always supported freedom of navigation in the Black Sea" and reaffirmed his continued close engagement in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Russian Federation on global food security.
