North Macedonia's Interior Minister, Borce Toskovski, confirmed that 51 people were killed and more than 100 injured when a fire broke out at a nightclub early on Sunday morning in the town of Kocani.
Toskovski explained that the fire was caused by "firework devices" used during a musical performance, adding that "sparks led to the fire... which spread throughout the nightclub."
A video from the event, verified by Reuters, showed a musical band performing on stage, surrounded by two fireworks launching white sparks into the air. The sparks ignited the ceiling above the band, and the video appeared to cut off as the band seemed to move away from the fire.
North Macedonia's public broadcaster reported that 27 people were transported to Skopje's hospital with severe burns, while 23 others were being treated at a medical center. Among the injured were minors. The fire broke out at around 3 a.m. in Kocani.
Prime Minister Christian Mikoski posted on Facebook: "A very difficult and sad day for Macedonia! The loss of so many young lives is irreplaceable, and the pain of the families, loved ones, and friends is indescribable."
He added, "I urge all relevant institutions... health services, and concerned authorities to take urgent action to assist the injured and support their families."
