This is the first time that the Sudanese Army has retaken control of the "Libya Market" in Omdurman since the "Rapid Support Forces" (RSF) seized it in the early days of the war in April 2023.
Omdurman is one of the three cities that together make up Sudan's capital.
A military source, who requested anonymity, told Anadolu Agency that the army "managed to advance deep into the Libya Market on Saturday morning after fighting with the Rapid Support Forces."
The source added that the army’s control of the market came after it regained nearby neighborhoods over the past few days.
Sudanese army personnel shared videos on social media showing their movements inside the Libya Market, one of the most famous markets in Sudan’s capital.
The Sudanese Army’s control of "Libya Market," a stronghold of the RSF in western Omdurman, paves the way for expanding its control in the western areas of Omdurman, which are still under the RSF's control.
These developments come after the army managed, over the past two days, to take control of most parts of Khartoum and the city of Bahri completely.
On Thursday, the Sudanese army announced that its forces had cleared the last pockets of RSF forces in the Khartoum province, after successfully regaining control of Khartoum Airport, security and military headquarters, and several neighborhoods in the east and south of the capital for the first time since April 2023.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese Army and the RSF have been engaged in a brutal war that has claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people and caused the displacement or refuge of nearly 15 million people, according to estimates from the United Nations and local authorities. A study by American universities estimated the death toll to be around 130,000.
Recently, the RSF has retreated in several states, including Khartoum, Al-Jazeera, White Nile, North Kordofan, Sennar, and Blue Nile.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF now only controls pockets in the western and southern parts of Omdurman, west of Khartoum, and parts of North and West Kordofan states.
The RSF also controls four states in the Darfur region (west), while the army controls the city of Al-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, the fifth state in the region.
