U.S. President Donald Trump was accused of violating strict dress codes during the funeral of Pope Francis, held at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican with around 250,000 attendees, according to a report published Saturday by the British newspaper Daily Mail.

According to the report, Trump arrived at the funeral wearing a medium-blue suit and a shiny blue tie, in breach of the protocol requiring men to wear a dark suit, a black tie, a white shirt, and black shoes and socks as a traditional sign of respect.
Trump was not alone in facing criticism. Daily Mail also noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended without wearing a tie, while former U.S. President Joe Biden chose a blue tie as well, which some viewed as a sign of "disrespect" for the major religious occasion.
Trump was seated in the front row alongside royalty and high-profile figures, donning his blue suit adorned with an American flag pin. Meanwhile, his wife, Melania Trump, complied with the Vatican's traditional dress code for women, wearing a conservative black coat, a lace veil, and black gloves.
Trump faced backlash from officials and public figures. Representative Alison Graham commented, “Why is Trump the only world leader wearing a blue suit? Does he have no sense of decorum? Shame on him.”
Criticism on Social Media
Social media users also expressed their disapproval, arguing that Trump showed a "lack of respect" compared to the majority of leaders who adhered to the full black dress code.
The site Ladbible shared several angry comments about Trump's attire. One user on platform X wrote: “Is there any reason why Donald Trump is wearing a blue suit instead of traditional black at a funeral?”
Another commented: “I see Trump wearing a blue suit at the Pope's funeral just to stand out. How petty!”
A third added: “Why is Trump in a blue suit while everyone else is in black? No respect at all.”
Another user mocked: “Trump, always seeking attention, wears a blue suit while others stick to traditional black.”
Many also pointed out the irony that Trump had previously criticized Zelenskyy for dressing casually during their meeting at the White House in February, only to break protocol himself at the Pope's funeral.
One commenter remarked: “Zelenskyy should now ask Trump why he’s wearing a blue suit at the Pope’s funeral while everyone else (including his wife Melania) is dressed in black. Doesn’t he own a black suit?”
Strict Dress Code Rules
The dress code for papal funerals requires men to wear entirely black suits with black ties, while women are expected to wear long black dresses with gloves and veils, with only simple pearl necklaces permitted as jewelry.
This controversy comes after a series of disputes surrounding world leaders' clothing choices at official events, including earlier criticism of Zelenskyy’s attire during his White House visit.
Trump’s choice of color drew negative attention, with many social media users accusing him of lacking "decorum."
