Turkish authorities arrested İmamoğlu on Wednesday, accusing him of corruption and supporting a terrorist organization. This move has sparked sharp criticism from the main opposition party, which described the arrest as a "coup attempt against the next president."

According to a statement issued by the Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday evening, the decision to seize the company, "İmamoğlu Construction, Trade, and Industry," followed a review of financial investigation reports, as reported by Reuters.

İmamoğlu, 54, from the Republican People's Party (CHP), had been leading in some polls over the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and was expected to be officially nominated for the presidency in the coming days.

The next presidential election is scheduled for 2028, as Erdoğan has exhausted his two-term limit for the presidency.

If Erdoğan wishes to run again, he would need to call for early elections before his current presidential term ends or amend the constitution.

Erdoğan suffered his worst electoral defeat last year when the Republican People’s Party won a landslide victory in Turkey's major cities, defeating the ruling AKP party in its traditional strongholds in the municipal elections. - (Agencies)
