The Iranian Customs Administration suggested that the explosion occurred in a warehouse storing hazardous goods and chemicals at the port.
Iranian state television confirmed that the blast originated from a container, although the contents remain unknown. It clarified that the explosion did not stem from an ammonia tank.
Footage circulating on social media captured the moment of the huge explosion, which created a massive fireball over the port.
The Tasnim News Agency reported that all port operations were suspended until security and rescue teams quickly brought the situation under control.
Local media said the explosion was so powerful that it shook the ground and was heard in nearby cities. The blast shattered windows of buildings located several kilometers away from the port.
The Director General of Crisis Management in Hormozgan Province, where Bandar Abbas is located, said the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Shahid Rajaee Port is one of Iran's most vital maritime hubs, handling container traffic and hosting oil storage facilities and petrochemical plants.
It is worth noting that Bandar Abbas has previously experienced similar incidents, including refinery explosions and gas leaks.
