This legally binding agreement aims to strengthen global defenses against emerging pathogens, after the COVID-19 pandemic claimed millions of lives between 2020 and 2022.

The agreement outlines measures to prevent future pandemics and promote global cooperation. These include the establishment of a system for access to pathogens and the sharing of their benefits, the development of geographically diverse research capacities, among other initiatives.

It also proposes the creation of a global supply chain and logistics network, focusing on enhancing the resilience and preparedness of health systems.

In a statement, the WHO said:
"After more than three years of intense discussions, WHO Member States have taken a major step forward in efforts to make the world safer from pandemics."

The organization added that the agreement sets out measures for the prevention of future pandemics and for global collaboration in responding to outbreaks.

The agreement is seen as a victory for the World Health Organization, at a time when multilateral organizations like the WHO have been heavily impacted by significant cuts in U.S. foreign funding.

It’s worth noting that the issue of future pandemics has become a growing global concern since the easing of the COVID-19 crisis, with calls for unified international efforts on research funding, and the development of effective mechanisms to deliver vaccines and medical supplies to regions frequently affected by dangerous outbreaks.

Negotiations faced complex challenges, particularly in areas such as financing, technology sharing, and equitable distribution of medicines.
