AMMAN— The successful completion of the $100
million Daehan Wind Power Project in Tafileh governorate will generate almost
52 megawatts of power and offset more than 112,000 tons of carbon dioxide
annually, the Daehan Wind Power Company announced in a press statement.

The project’s completion was marked Tuesday by
Daehan Wind Power Company, a joint venture between DL Energy Co. and Korea
Southern Power Co. (KOSPO), at an
inaugural ceremony in Amman’s W Hotel. Key project stakeholders, local media
and representatives of Kingdom’s energy sector were in attendance.
The project has been in development since 2012 and
aims to enhance Jordan’s energy security and independence through sustainable
clean energy solutions. Developed in cooperation with Vestas Middle East, a
wind turbine manufacturer, the project’s total power generation capacity of
51.75 megawatts will meet the annual electricity needs of around 40,000
households.
The Daehan Wind Power Project will work to reduce
the Kingdom’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources like oil and natural
gas, which will ultimately help make Jordan more energy independent, while also
reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The project is expected to
offset more than 112,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
The project has a 20-year power purchase agreement
with Jordan’s National Electric Power Company to supply power through the
national grid.
Despite the challenges faced as a result of the
COVID-19 pandemic, the Daehan Wind Power Project began commercial operation on
July 31 this year. The project will be managed in close cooperation with local
communities, and will provide employment to these communities by hiring local
staff for security, logistics, and maintenance.
“The official commencement of operations at Daehan
Wind Power Project serves to realize a pivotal investment in Jordan’s
environmental and economic future. As clean energy solutions increasingly
become a global imperative, the need to enhance the Kingdom’s energy security
and sustainability will only increase,” said Ji-Hoon Kang, vice president of overseas
business development at KOSPO, addressing the assembled guests.
“This project signifies a clear and confident step
in the right direction, and a strong indication of the country’s strategic
commitment to pursuing a secure, sustainable future,” the vice president said.
Daehan Wind Power CEO Tae-Hee Cho said that the Daehan
Wind Power Project represents a significant achievement along Jordan’s
strategic path toward greater energy independence.
“We at Daehan Wind Power Company greatly appreciate
the government’s support in helping facilitate and bring this project to life,”
the CEO said. “We would also like to thank our investors, lenders, and local
community members who have supported the realization of this milestone.”
Seung-Woo Lee, KOSPO CEO, said the project
was a significant milestone along KOSPO’s strategic journey in the Middle East
and North Africa: “With the success of this project serving as a benchmark, we
will continue to expand our renewable energy portfolio across the MENA region,
and throughout other pivotal regions and markets.”
