In a statement to the Jordan News Agency, Petra on Tuesday,
the secretary-general of the Jordan Navigation Syndicate, Muhammad Al-Dalabeeh,
said that the movement of passengers recorded a remarkable increase in nine
months, indicating that the number of passengers reached 133,000 passengers up
to September, compared to 59,000 passengers for the same period last year.
The number of ships coming in to the port of Aqaba increased
by about 13 percent up to September. In the first nine months of the year,
1,339 ships arrived at the port of Aqaba, compared to just 1,180 ships for the
same period last year.
Dalabeeh confirmed an increase in the number of vehicles
coming to the port via Roll-on/roll-off ships, which reached 9,425 vehicles in
the first nine months of the year, a 7.3 percent increase from the same period
last year.
He pointed out that container movement at the port declined
by 10.5 percent up to September to reach about 567,000 containers compared to
the same period last year, due to the rise in freight charges and the drop in
imports, in addition to the scarcity of empty containers for export.
Dalabih said that cruise ships recorded only slight movement
this year due to the slow recovery of the tourism and travel sector worldwide due
to the repercussions of the pandemic, adding that he expects that to increase
next year.
