Jaghbir told the Jordan News Agency, Petra,
that the US is considered one of the most important trading partners with
Jordan, adding that Jordan’s imports from the US made up about 8 percent of all
non-oil imports last year.
The Kingdom exports around JD1.220 billion to
the US and imports around JD1.003 billion, which gives Jordan a surplus of
around JD217 million.
Among Jordan’s main exports are textiles, medicine,
metal products, air conditioners, jewelry, food stuff products, transport
equipment, and animal products.
Jaghbir added that Jordanian-American economic
relations are deeply rooted. He attributed this to
His Majesty King Abdullah’s efforts
to integrate the national economy with the global economy, in addition to
providing support to the industrial sector and reinforcing its competitiveness in
foreign markets.
In 2006, Jordan was the first Arab country to
sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States, which came into
effect in January 2010.
Jaghbir noted that the FTA with the United
States aims
to boost investments, particularly in the industrial sector, as well as contribute
in the exchange of US manufacturing and marketing expertise, through 75 facilities
in garment sector, most of which were established with foreign investment.
