AMMAN — Online bill payments through the National Electronic Payment
System jumped by 27 percent in 2021 to JD9.5 billion, with 34 million
transactions, a 51 percent increase year-on-year, according to the Jordan News
Agency Petra.

Adel Sharkas, the governor of the
Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ), said Saturday that mobile phone payments increased by 107 percent in
volume, reaching 25 million transactions, while their value increased by 117
percent from 2020 to JD2 billion in 2022.
In the bank's 2021 report on Jordan's payment system, he added that paper
payment instruments such as checks amounted to 10 million checks with a total
value of nearly JD49 billion.
About 4.5 million cards of various types (credit, debit, and prepaid) were
issued by local banks, whereas approximately 148,000 cards (both credit and
prepaid) were issued by payment and electronic money transfer companies in the
Kingdom.
Concerning electronic payment channels, Sharkas noted that the number of ATMs
in the Kingdom has reached 2,195, while the number of POS terminals has reached
44,314.
The use of electronic channels such as ATMs, the Internet, and mobile phones
increased significantly over the past year, accounting for 67 percent of all
payment transactions as opposed to 33 percent made over the counter, the CBJ
governor indicated.
