AMMAN —
President of the General Trade Union for Workers in General Services and Free
Vocations
Khaled Abu Marjoub said Tuesday that Jordanian workers are suffering
because of the significant rise in prices, due to the current circumstances,
and of low wages that do not help them meet their basic needs, according to
Jo24.

Abu Marjoub said
that wages of workers in the hospitality sector, including at hotels and
restaurants, and in other private sector fields, are very low and that “social
security corporation data on workers’ salaries shows that they are in the
poverty bracket”.
Abu Marjoub called
on the government to revise the salaries of all workers and raise the minimum
wage to ensure that they can lead a decent life.
He also asked
employers to respect workers’ rights and not lower their wages, and praised the
government’s efforts to control prices and take strict measures against traders
who take advantage of the crisis brought about by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“Companies and institutions, especially those operating in
the tourism sector, are taking advantage of the economic repercussions of the
pandemic, using it as an excuse not to raise workers’ wages despite the return
to life as it was before the pandemic and the mitigating measures taken by the
government recently,” said Abu Marjoub, adding that Ramadan is bound to add to
the burden felt by citizens across the country.
