PRESS RELEASE — In a
sit-down interview with Mr. Rami Scandar, Country
President Near East and Maghreb, AstraZeneca, he summed up: The detrimental health impacts
of climate change on people and the planet are being increasingly felt,
including through a rise in chronic and infectious diseases. Recognizing that
no one business, government, or organization can do it alone, AstraZeneca is
committed to playing its part in building a more sustainable healthcare future
in Jordan, and this agreement is an important step toward that goal.

● Can you elaborate on the phases that will be prioritized in the establishment of green hospitals in Jordan under the new agreement, and how these align with the country's healthcare needs? Additionally, what positive impact do you anticipate these initiatives will have on patient outcomes and overall healthcare sustainability?
The green
hospitals will not be specialized for one TA but according to the MOH
assessment, certain facilities will be chosen to start piloting and phase out
the green house initiative.
As the burden
of disease grows and the population ages, we believe that science is key to
helping unlock the answers to healthcare challenges. We are focused on creating
innovative medicines and improving access to them. In this way, we deliver the
greatest benefit to patients, healthcare systems, and societies globally,
including in the Near East and Maghreb region.
We believe the future of healthcare rests
on building resilient healthcare systems, enabling health equity, and taking
action on climate change.
Climate change is the most significant
public health crisis of our time, and we believe there is a strong link between
a healthy planet and healthy people.
In the Middle
East and Africa region, which is warming at twice the global rate, this is felt
acutely. Already, some of the region’s cities experience the highest levels of
air pollution globally, with respiratory conditions, heart diseases, and other
chronic illnesses worsening due to climate impact, pushing our healthcare
systems to their limits.
This is why,
at AstraZeneca, in the Near East and Maghreb, we are committed to transforming
the future of healthcare. From decarbonizing patient pathways to taking
significant strides to achieve net-zero healthcare, we believe the future of
healthcare rests on building resilient healthcare systems, enabling health
equity, and taking action on climate change.
● How does AstraZeneca plan to incorporate sustainable practices and technologies in the design and operations of green hospitals in Jordan? Are there any innovative solutions or best practices that will be implemented to ensure both environmental and economic sustainability?
In Jordan, we
are bringing this focus to life by collaborating with the Jordanian Government
by committing to support in delivering more sustainable and low-carbon
healthcare. This will be done by facilitating the development of a “green
hospital accreditation framework” in Jordan, including assessing carbon
footprints, providing solar panels supporting renewable energy usage, and
providing a water purification system for the different facilities.
● Are there any projected figures or statistics that showcase the anticipated positive impact on both healthcare delivery and environmental sustainability as a result of this agreement? Whether in terms of reduced carbon footprint, enhanced patient outcomes, or increased access to quality care?
Globally the
health industry is responsible for an estimated 5% of greenhouse gas emissions
every year, and if current trajectories continue, these emissions are predicted
to triple by 2050. Today’s innovative
agreement seeks to lower that contribution and deliver more sustainable,
low-carbon healthcare in 2024 and will achieve this by facilitating the
development of a “green hospital accreditation framework” in Jordan including
assessing carbon footprints, provision of solar panels supporting the usage of
renewable energy and provision of water purification system for the different
facilities.
● How does the company plan to engage with the local community and healthcare stakeholders in Jordan to ensure the success and longevity of its current and future projects and initiatives? Are there any collaborative partnerships or outreach programs envisioned to support the integration of these sustainable healthcare practices into the local healthcare system?
AZ Jordan has been in the
market proudly for more than 40 years with local distributors and partners
providing different brands within our Therapy Areas covering Respiratory,
Cardiovascular, and oncology diseases.
We are committed to our
presence in the market with a high market share to continue providing
innovative products and develop partnerships with the key stakeholders and
government especially to raise disease awareness, support the education of
healthcare providers, and provide healthcare access in resilient ecosystems to
the Jordanian population.
We
are proud of our partnerships with the Jordanian MOH as well as King Hussein
Cancer Center & Foundation which focuses on research, awareness,
prevention & detection as well as access to cancer care & medical
excellence.
From a sustainability angle, our office in Jordan is in a green
sustainable building and we launched the Young Health Program (YHP) back
in 2021 in Jordan with a unique focus on young people aged 10 to 24, living in vulnerable
environments and under-resourced settings aiming to prevent the most common non-communicable
diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory
disease through empowering young people to manage their health.
We
are maintaining this program through our partnership with the Royal Health
Awareness Society (RHAS). The partnership between
AstraZeneca and the Royal Health Awareness Society (RHAS) dates back to 2016,
being quite a reputable association in Jordan sharing with us the same vision
of enhancing the quality of life and generating educative programs ensuring we
have healthier generations and societies. We have united several times to reach
Jordanian children and youth in Jordanian schools and universities with the
sole aim of raising health awareness, yet with regards to this project, our
focus is directed towards smoking habits, types, and dangers by reaching the
largest number of young people in the Kingdom.
Through YHP, we plan in 3 years
to reach 2600 students from 13 schools in Amman during our first year, and by
the end of the 3 years, we aim to reach 7800 students from a variety of schools
distributed across the Kingdom.
