In a statement on Wednesday, Al-Bataineh said that the National Electric Power Company's teams have completed 95% of the civil works for the project, and are continuing to install electrical equipment and conduct necessary tests.

Jordan began supplying Iraq with electricity through its national grid at the end of March 2024, as part of the first phase of the interconnection between the two countries.

According to Dr. Al-Bataineh, the supply capacity in the first phase is 40 MW, reaching the Al-Rutbah area. Upon completion of the second phase, the project will extend to the Al-Qa'im region in Iraq.

He explained that Jordan and Iraq signed the first amendment to the electricity sale contract in February 2024, which aims to supply Iraq with 132 kV electricity to feed the estimated 40 MW load of the Al-Rutbah area.

He added that after the second phase is completed, the total capacity supplied to Iraq will be around 150 MW, and as the interconnection progresses, it may reach up to 500 MW in the medium term.

The foundation stone for the Jordanian-Iraqi electricity interconnection project was laid on October 6, 2022, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Bisher Al-Khasawneh and Iraqi Prime Minister Dr. Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani.
