This overall increase can be attributed to several categories of goods experiencing price hikes.

The consumer price index, considered the most widely used measure of inflation, reached a record level of 108.83 in Jordan for the month of June, as reported by the Department of Statistics.

This figure represents a 1.17 percent increase compared to the same month in 2022, with various categories of goods contributing to the rise.

Price increases in multiple categories drive inflation
The surge in CPI was primarily driven by price increases in goods such as dairy products, personal care items, rents, and various others.

These categories collectively accounted for 64.42 percent of the relative importance. In contrast, certain categories, including vegetables, meat and poultry, transportation, and beverages, saw a decrease in their prices, contributing to 34.01 percent of the relative importance.

In June 2023, the CPI increase was primarily driven by price increases in goods such as meat and poultry, clothing, and furniture, among others, accounting for 44.05 percent of the relative importance.

Conversely, categories including fruits and nuts, transportation, and personal care experienced a decrease in prices, contributing to 40.11 percent of the relative importance.

Inflation for the first half of 2023 remains high
The cumulative consumer price index for the first six months of 2023 stood at 108.55, indicating a significant increase of 2.98 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

The upward trend in prices can be attributed to multiple categories, such as fuel and lighting, health, education, and home maintenance services. These categories collectively accounted for 82.04 percent of the relative importance.

However, some categories, including vegetables, spices, and clothing, witnessed a decrease in prices, contributing to 16.40 percent of the relative importance.

It is worth noting that the prices of the remaining commodity groups did not undergo any significant changes during the mentioned periods. Despite the overall increase in the consumer price index, some categories experienced stability in their pricing.
