Dead Sea, Jordan - May 15, 2024 - Careem, the region’s leading multi-service app, joined technology leaders from across the world on stage at the Xpand Conference at the Dead Sea in Jordan, which attracted over 1,500 technology enthusiasts from across the region.

 

Baber Shaikh, Head of Engineering at Careem, delivered a presentation on the functional, geographic and organisational considerations for scaling from a start-up into a multi-service business, building on his experience leading engineering teams at companies including Microsoft, Groupon, Nvidia and Careem.

 

Serving more than 1 million customers in Jordan, the Careem app has expanded to offer multiple services including ride-hailing, food delivery, F&B discovery and discounts through Careem DineOut, customer and corporate on-demand delivery service through Careem Box, and shop delivery. Careem has created over 50,000 earning opportunities for Captains in Jordan, with plans to unlock 10,000 more within the year.

 

Careem's expansion in Jordan is also demonstrated through the launch of its second new office in Amman in less than a year, establishing itself as Careem’s fastest-growing engineering hub with over 80 engineers hired within 2 years.

 

His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Hanandah, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship commented: “The significant transformation we are witnessing in economic activities, relying on the advancement of the digital world and the substantial increase in reliance on digital channels, has greatly contributed to the development of individuals' economy and the sharing economy. One of the most important new economic activities is smart transportation supported by advanced applications, which has facilitated citizens' lives and provided steady earning opportunities for many Jordanians. Additionally, the significant support provided by companies in supporting activities and events, whether economic, touristic, or social, as is the case today with Careem as a strategic partner in Xpand, has greatly contributed to its success.”
