AMMAN —
Representative of the Clothing, Garment, and Jewelry Sector at the
Jordan Chamber of Commerce Asaad Qawasmi said that the demand for clothes and shoes
during the present winter season has dropped compared to previous years despite
special offers and up to 50 percent discounts advertised by retailers,
according to Ad-Dustour.

Qawasmi said that
reductions announced by many shops and on various goods and brands did not
serve to increase customers, and that retailers have incurred losses due to the
accumulation of goods.
Qawasmi said that
merchants are preparing to import goods for the summer season and singing
contracts with suppliers for Ramadan, estimating that the Kingdom’s imports of
clothing for the upcoming season will reach approximately JD60 million.
The sector has been
experiencing difficulties for several years and the pandemic has exacerbated
the retailers’ suffering, according to Qawasmi, who added that the high cost of
shipping is one of the obstacles facing the sector and that recent developments
in the
Ukrainian-Russian crisis would further affect the sector, particularly
with regard to goods imported from Europe.
The clothing sector
plays an important role in reducing poverty rates and providing
job opportunities, with more than 10,000 shops across Jordan that employ 45,000
people, 95 percent of whom are Jordanians.
