AMMAN — The low uptake of engineering in
the labor market is caused by a dramatic decline in economic growth by 1.9
percent, as opposed to a steady population growth, President of the
Jordan Engineers Association (JEA) Fawzi Masad said, according to Al-Ghad News.

Masad said unemployment among university graduates
in different fields, including engineering, reached 50 percent.
During a JEA swearing ceremony of newly-graduated
engineers in Irbid, Masad said that the future will be bright for the
“privileged”.
“Everyone must be able to undertake efforts, give,
develop and work in various areas,” he told the graduates.
Masad tackled the JEA LEARN platform launched
through the Engineers Training Center (ETC), and has more than 6,000 training
courses in various engineering specialties. In addition to its focus on
personal skill development, learning, listening, communication and
self-development, he noted that recent studies confirm that 70 percent of
employment rates depend on personal skills.
The JEA undertook considerable efforts in opening up
new horizons for its members, he said. It sought opportunities in Germany, and
discussed strengthening cooperation and networking with other countries. JEA
also contacted all the requesting authorities of engineers around the world, he
pointed out.
He said that the economic crisis, and various wars
have affected the capacity to absorb new hires in all majors.
Masad said JEA is currently developing legislation
to open up areas of work for engineers by contributing to the industry and
trade sectors, and developing them to secure employment opportunities.
He referred to amendments JEA advocates in the
pension fund, which he said will contribute to maintaining its durability and
continuity to ensure a “decent life” for engineers.
