AMMAN — Oil affairs expert,
Hashem Akel, has said that a sharp rise in the price of
oil derivatives worldwide in January means that local fuel prices will rise in
varying proportions in February, according to Ammon News.

Akel said
that the price of octane 90 gasoline would increase by 5.5 percent, which is
equivalent to 45 fils, and the price of octane 95 gasoline would increase by 4
percent, which is also equivalent to 45 fils.
As to diesel
fuel, he said that there has been a cumulative increase since
October of 90 fils in addition to an increase from December of 55 fils.
If the
December price is calculated as a reference without looking at the previous
months, the increases will total 8.5 percent, but if the increase in October,
November, and December is calculated up to January, the increase would amount to
90 fils — a sizeable hike of 14 percent.
Akel indicated that these increases are considerably high and are stressful to citizens,
calling on the government to reconsider and to at least stabilize prices to
support people during the winter months amid difficult economic conditions.
