He said that the 5G network will increase
individuals’ internet speeds, and that internet use has risen to 12,000
terabytes per day during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prime Minister
Bisher Al-Khasawneh announced on
January 9 that the government had given the green light to local telecoms
companies to begin establishing the infrastructure necessary for 5G telecoms
services.
The ministry has been resolving “many outstanding
issues, ... and addressing problems in the telecoms sector,” Hanandeh said.
From the date licenses are granted, it will take a
year and a half for services to be launched in limited areas, and three years
to achieve coverage for 50 percent of the country’s populated areas.
The
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission
estimates that the infrastructure for 5G services will cost JD750 million.
Government services
The government will launch a
website that will, through the Sanad app, offer 400 services to citizens in
2022, the minister said.
The application will issue sets of digital versions
of personal documents such as birth certificates and drivers and vehicle
licenses, which will appear automatically once users register.
The
Sanad app has been downloaded more than 2.5
million times, Hanandeh added.
Users will no longer have to provide a photo to
register for the application, the minister said, and that fingerprints will be
used instead. More than 500 people are currently employed to facilitate users’
registration.
More than 100,000 people have fully activated
digital identities through the app, and the ministry is working to “create a
system for Jordanians abroad to activate (their) digital identity, ... all in
2022.”
The minister stressed that digitization is key to developing
the economy and job creation.
