AMMAN — The
Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority hosted a joint meeting with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission
Company and
Jordan’s National Electric Power Company to discuss the fundamental
principles of the joint electrical interconnection project. The two-day meeting
was held in Dubai.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, the
meeting discussed the strategic draft project document, as well as the
principles and commercial models, which proved the feasibility of the
interconnection between the three sides. A summary of the feasibility study as
well as the organizational and structural issues related to the project were
also reviewed during the meeting.
The parties agreed on an action plan and signed a
memorandum of understanding that will ensure the fulfillment of mutual
benefits, contribute to supporting electricity networks, improving the quality
of electricity and increasing the reliability of interconnected networks.

Ahmed Al-Ibrahim said that the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Project is very
important in relation to infrastructure connectivity as it will achieve some
important strategic objectives, like enhancing energy security and raising the
level of reliability and safety for Gulf electrical systems.
The authority initiated a study to expand electricity
interconnection inside and outside the GCC system, and the linkage with
Egypt and Jordan will be a gateway to Africa and Europe, enabling the investment in
the energy field through energy trade and will provide a strategic commodity
that can be marketed through the Arab region to
Europe. In the long run, the authority
seeks to connect with the interconnection system in Africa and Europe.
