The loan is intended to address the pressing need for
educational facilities and to accommodate approximately 18,000 male and female
students.
The newly signed agreement is expected to
fund the construction of 20 new schools and the extension of 10 existing schools.
Furthermore, the German Reconstruction Bank will finance an
additional 10 schools through the
Regional Trust Fund for the Syrian Crisis (MADAD).
The agreement, signed by Zeina Toukan, the minister of
Planning and International Cooperation, and Mark Schwiete, the
German Development Bank (KfW) country director, marks the second phase of continuous
German support for school construction.
The initial agreement, known as the "
Support to the Education Sector in Jordan" program, was signed in December 2021.
Enhancing accessibility
The primary goal of the project is to enhance accessibility
to
primary and secondary education in Jordan. It encompasses the construction
of new schools, expansion and equipping of existing schools, and the provision
of additional classrooms in areas with high demand.
The project aims to ensure quality education that is
comprehensive and child-friendly.
Responsibility for the project's implementation will be
shared between the
Ministry of Education and the
Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
Germany's support for Jordan's education system has already
yielded significant results. Over the past years, Germany has contributed to
the construction of 37 schools across Jordan, with an additional 17 schools
currently under construction.
Germany's commitment to supporting Jordan's development and
welfare is reflected in their position as the country's second-largest donor.
Since 1960, Germany has provided grants and loans amounting to 2.7 billion
euros, demonstrating their long-standing
partnership and dedication to Jordan's
progress.
