The Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan, signed on behalf of the Jordanian government, while the Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Asari Hideki, signed on behalf of the Japanese government. The agreement was signed by Shingo Morihata, the JICA representative in Jordan, in the presence of the Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Saud.

This grant will contribute to the development of operational and management systems for water supply facilities in Ma'an by installing SCADA systems and rehabilitating facilities. This will enhance the quality of water supply services in the governorate and reduce water losses.

Minister Toukan expressed her gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for their continuous support for Jordan’s development priorities in line with the economic modernization vision. She emphasized Jordan’s strong ties with Japan and the deep, historical relations between the two countries, focusing on their commitment to enhancing cooperation in various fields of mutual interest.

The Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Asari Hideki, affirmed his government’s commitment to continuing financial and technical support to Jordan in various sectors of common interest, which will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations. He praised Jordan as a model in the region for its ongoing economic and political reforms.

Meanwhile, Shingo Morihata, the JICA representative, highlighted the importance of the project, particularly because Jordan is one of the poorest countries in terms of water resources. He noted that the southern governorates of Ma'an, Tafilah, and Karak face challenges with high water loss rates and poor water supply services. The water supply system in Ma'an lacks an effective management system to monitor water supply efficiency, compounded by outdated distribution pipes and pumps.

In addition to this grant project, JICA is implementing a technical cooperation project to improve the management of water loss in the southern governorates, which will help build the capacity of water engineers and technicians. This will positively impact the National Conveyance Project and aims to provide stable water supply to the southern region, including Ma'an.
