Alloush
highlighted a noticeable increase in tablet imports during the third quarter of
this year, based on official data from the association. About 91,000 tablets
were imported, exceeding a value of JD12 million, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
Alloush
noted that the third-quarter surge signifies changing consumption trends and
technological preferences in the Jordanian market, reflecting a shift in
consumer behavior toward tablets. He attributed this change to weak purchasing
power and liquidity, resulting in a drop in the average tablet price sought by
consumers from around JD300 to JD80.
The
increase in third-quarter imports is partly attributed to summer vacation for
school students, with tablets used as entertainment for children. Additionally,
the start of the study season for schools and universities contributed to
tablets becoming a primary means of learning for students, especially in the
secondary stages.
During
the first half of the year, Jordan imported 84,000 tablets, totaling
approximately JD4 million. The import of tablets in the second quarter was
similar to the first quarter, with around 30,000 devices valued at
approximately JD2 million in the first 90 days and 54,000 devices worth more
than JD1.9 million in the second quarter.
Alloush
confirmed that the sector imported about 303,000 tablet devices in 2022, worth
JD7.5 million, indicating a 39 percent decline in import value compared to
2021, which witnessed the import of devices worth more than JD12 million.
