AMMAM — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration Tawfiq Al-Krishan
said that the electricity bill consumes about 25 percent of Jordan’s
municipality budget.

He pointed out
that the “solar energy cost for the Kingdom’s municipalities reached about JD90
million, which will be covered by the Cities and Villages Development Bank and
the European Investment Bank during the coming days to reduce the energy bill”.
During a visit
to Azraq Municipality Thursday, Krishan also said that “equipment provided as
grant will be rejected if it has no agent in Jordan”, and that “municipalities
will gradually replace any machinery that has no agent to represent it in the
Kingdom”.
The minister
issued directives to municipality mayors to prove the efficiency of their work
to the citizens through achievements, especially in the areas of sanitation and
street paving.
Al-Mamlaka TV,
quoting the annual data released by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral
Resources, said that Jordan imported JD1.858 billion worth of energy in 2021.
The ministry’s
yearbook 2021 stated: “The quantities of primary energy consumed in Jordan in
2021 amounted to 8,166 tonnes of oil equivalent,
The rate of
electricity consumption per capita amounted to 1,746 kilowatt hour per person
last year, according to the data.
The natural gas
contribution to generating electricity declined over the past year, reaching 73
percent compared to 2020, when it amounted to 80 percent.
The contribution
of local sources to generating electricity increased to 28 percent in 2021,
compared to 22 percent in 2020.
According to the
Jordan News Agency, Petra, Jordan imported 11.8 million barrels of crude oil
through the port of Aqaba, and a total of 1.19 million barrels of Iraqi oil
were imported between the beginning of September 2021 and the end of 2021.
According to a
report published by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on its website,
oil production from the Hamza oil field amounted to 105,000 barrels during
2021.
This quantity
was produced based on the agreement signed with the National Petroleum Company
to develop and operate Hamza oil field in 2020 with the aim of increasing the
field’s productivity, the report said.
In this context,
Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh launched last June the oil exploration
project at Sarhan well, in the Kingdom’s southeast, at depths of 1,400 to 1,750
meters.
