The agreement with
OceanX, an ocean exploration initiative, will provide advanced experience and
techniques to explore the marine ecosystem in the Gulf of Aqaba, ASEZA’s Chief
Commissioner
Nayef Bakheet, according to Petra.
He said the accord
will help put the Aqaba Marine Reserve on the global network of marine
reserves.
“This
collaboration is in accordance with the vision of
His Majesty King Abdullah II,
after the Aqaba Marine Reserve was declared and the Aqaba Marine Science
Station was established,” he said. He added that it is hoped that Aqaba would
be a ‘’port of call for international marine research”.
OceanX’s Vice
Chairman Vincent Pieribone said he appreciated the collaboration with Jordan’s
competent authorities to explore the deep-sea and gain an extended
understanding of the biodiversity of the Gulf of Aqaba.
“The 2-week
scientific mission in
Aqaba includes exploratory trips to conduct studies in
Jordanian waters, with the participation of Jordanian and international
scientists, researchers and students, aboard the most advanced science and
media vessel ever built,” Pieribone said.
