In a press statement, Barmawi noted that the reserves include both stored supplies within Jordan and quantities under contract.
He pointed out that the ministry has worked in recent years to enhance Jordan’s storage capacity for wheat and barley, which now stands at approximately 1 million tons across various silos and underground storage facilities. This expansion has helped strengthen the country’s strategic reserves. The storage capacities of major facilities are as follows:
Juwayda Silos: 220,000 tons
Irbid (North) Silos: 130,000 tons
Ruseifa Silos: 130,000 tons
Zarqa Underground Storage: 350,000 tons
Aqaba Silos: 100,000 tons
The actual subsidy for flour last year amounted to approximately 80 million dinars, as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining stable bread prices.
Barmawi previously stated that government subsidies are aimed at keeping bread affordable for all citizens.
Jordanians consume around 10 million loaves of Arabic bread daily, with an average of 1.3 loaves per person. The country’s annual consumption of non-subsidized (zero) flour stands at 100,000 tons, while subsidized flour consumption reaches 450,000 tons per year.
