AMMAN — According to official data from the
Department of Statistics, Jordan's trade deficit reached JD2.39 billion in the first quarter
of 2023, representing a 4.9 percent increase compared to the same period last
year.

The monthly report on foreign trade in the
Kingdom indicates that the total value of exports during the first quarter of the current year
amounted to JD2.11 billion, marking a significant 6.3 percent increase compared
to the corresponding period in 2022, Khaberni reported.
The
value of national exports during this period rose by 8.8
percent, reaching JD1.97 billion. However, re-exports witnessed a decline of
19.1 percent, totaling JD143.7 million when compared to the same period in
2022.
Imports show a steady rise
Conversely, imports in Jordan surged by 5.6 percent during
the first quarter of 2023, totaling JD4.51 billion. This increase indicates a
growing demand for foreign goods and services in the country.
As a result of the contrasting trends between
exports and imports, Jordan's trade deficit, which signifies the difference between the
value of imports and the total value of exports, grew to JD2.39 billion in the
first quarter of 2023.
This represents a 4.9 percent increase when compared to the
same period in 2022.
Exports experience decline in March
Examining the monthly performance, the report reveals that
the
total value of exports in March 2023 amounted to JD655.2 million,
registering a significant 15.6 percent decrease in comparison to the same month
in 2022.
National exports during March 2023 also experienced a
decline of 15.6 percent, totaling JD603.3 million.
Additionally, the
value of re-exports for March 2023 reached
JD51.9 million, showing a 14.8 percent decrease when compared to the same month
in 2022. In contrast, imports during March 2023 amounted to JD1.5 billion,
indicating a minor decrease of 0.8 percent compared to March 2022.
As a consequence of these monthly trends, the trade deficit
reached JD848.7 million in March 2023, marking a substantial 14.7 percent
increase compared to the same month in 2022.
