AMMAN — The use of checks in Jordan has seen a noticeable
decline over the past five years, according to the
Jordan Payment System Report
for 2022.

According to the report, issued by the
Central Bank, the
number of checks circulated in Jordan reached 16,185,312 in 2018, before
decreasing to 14,230,234 checks in 2019.
The use of
checks in Jordan declined again in 2020, reaching
a total of 10,107,035 checks.
Checks used in the country slightly increased in 2021,
reaching 10,172,297 checks, before rising again in 2022 to reach 10,270,564
checks.
Possible causes
The general decrease in the use of checks is attributed to
the continuous development of the Jordanian banking sector and the emergence of
new and diverse payment methods provide alternatives to checks, according to
the Central Bank. They also emphasize the impact of the
Covid-19 pandemic.
The Central Bank considers that these new methods compete
with checks in terms of ease of use, lower risks, and costs for the benefiting
parties.
