Khasawneh explained that the
World Bank and other international institutions are predicting significant challenges for
the global economy over the next two years. And given that Jordan is affected
by the global economic environment, the country is preparing itself to face the
economic challenges that are ahead.
During an interactive meeting held to
review the progress of the
Economic Modernization Vision 2023–2025, Khasawneh
explained that the government is planning to enter into some struggling
investments. However, these investments will be based on correcting the path
rather than on economic feasibility.
GrowthKhasawneh explained that Jordan aims to
achieve a growth rate of up to 5.5 percent within the next 10 years, after
implementing the
economic modernization vision. He also acknowledged the
challenging international economic situation and the state of uncertainty in
this international scene.
The government "seeks to regain credibility through a clear, frank, and committed national discourse that does not sell a mirage, while at the same time an ambitious discourse, because relying on an ambitious discourse and ambitious goals is what leads us to progress, even if we do not achieve 100 percent of these goals."
Jordan, he said, is working towards
achieving ambitious economic goals while facing these challenges.
‘A record achievement’Khasawneh highlighted that achieving up
to 70 percent or 80 percent of the targets of the
economic modernization vision is "a record achievement for the nation".
He said that attracting investments at a
rate of JD1.5 billion and stimulating and enabling national investments at a
rate of JD2.5 billion is a significant challenge. However, it is a fundamental
pillar for achieving the economic vision's goals.
Khasawneh explained that Jordan needs to
develop an effective and successful approach to deal with the challenges of
unemployment and poverty.
Empowering the private sectorThe public sector is "at its
best" in its public and military sectors. However, it cannot create jobs
for more than 15,000 people, according to Khasawneh.
Therefore, the only way to find job
opportunities "lies in empowering the private sector on the basis that it
is a key partner in the economic development process, in economic development,
and in enlarging the economy and creating job opportunities."
Khasawneh added that a portion of
existing investments is "struggling, and the government is seeking to
overcome its obstacles".
The government "cannot sell the citizen a fantasy, because this will brand us as producing more lack of credibility with the citizens that we suffer from today".
He explained that the government did not
enter into the Sixth Circle Towers project "based on its economic
feasibility, but rather based on removing obstacles so that this project does
not remain a symbol of failure, and hopefully, it will turn into a symbol of
success."
Cannot sell a ‘fantasy’Khasawneh emphasized that achieving the
goals of the economic modernization vision requires partnership with everyone.
He said that the government "cannot sell the citizen a fantasy, because
this will brand us as producing more lack of credibility with the citizens that
we suffer from today".
The government "seeks to regain
credibility through a clear, frank, and committed national discourse that does
not sell a mirage, while at the same time an ambitious discourse, because
relying on an ambitious discourse and ambitious goals is what leads us to
progress, even if we do not achieve 100 percent of these goals."
The meeting, hosted by the prime minister's
office, was attended by economic leaders representing the legislative and
executive authorities, the private sector, civil society institutions, and
partners involved in implementing the economic renewal vision.
