He said in a statement on Monday that the sector is
working to ensure that the domestic market has a safe stock of foodstuff,
especially the most consumed, and in demand, and of high quality, at affordable
prices, and asked for permission to import legumes and grains from Syria.
Hamada said that Jordan is one of the safest
countries in the region it terms of food, because of existing health controls
and the sector’s commitment to producing safe food products.
He stressed the need for the Food Security Council
to examine and address all challenges facing the food sector, adding that the
establishment of the council is an important step towards maintaining food security
ensuring sufficient stockpiles of basic commodities.
He reiterated his demand to lift taxes and customs
duties on various food commodities for a period of five years, and injecting
liquidity into markets to help importers and traders import goods and enhance
the strategic stock of food, as well as to unify the supervisory authorities to
avoid confusion and duplication of inspection.
The JCC works with various stakeholders to address
the challenges facing the food sector, which is essential to the national food
security, according to Hamadah.
Annually, Jordan imports approximately $4 billion worth of
food, part raw materials for industry and part ready for consumption.
