Rahahleh said that in the first phase of the health insurance system 1.2
million people will be covered through the SSC, with a 5 percent proposed
contribution for workers and retirees covered by the insurance.
The new health insurance plan covers those who do not have health
insurance through their employers in the private sector, and retirees who do
not have insurance, along with their family members, he said.
More than 2 million
Jordanians, or about one-third, do not have health
insurance, and Jordanians spend JD750 million directly on health care every
year, the director-general said.
Rahahleh
added that health insurance has existed as one of the insurance clauses within
the Social Security Law since 1978, but that, since that time, it has not been
implemented properly.
