AMMAN —
Planning and International Cooperation Minister Nasser Shraideh has presented the objectives of the
Economic Modernization Vision, which come under Royal directives, according to
the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
Shraideh made the remarks in a meeting with
representatives of state embassies and donors participating in the annual
meetings of the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in
Washington, DC, the Planning Ministry said in a statement.
The minister briefed the gathering about the
developments in preparing the vision’s action plan for the years 2023–2025,
which the ministry will undertake in coordination with sectoral teams and
ministerial committees formed by the Cabinet.
He noted the
importance of seeing economic reform as a roadmap for the next 10 years to
allow Jordan to benefit from the potential of its national economy, and the
Kingdom’s competitive advantages.
Shraideh urged Jordan’s development partners and donors to continue supporting the country’s efforts for implementing economic, and development reform plans and programs.
Shraideh added that in the coming months, a plan
would be agreed on to provide the necessary funding for its implementation,
whether through capital spending available from the state budget, or through
foreign aid, and local and foreign investments.
He urged Jordan’s development partners and donors to
continue supporting the country’s efforts for implementing economic, and
development reform plans and programs.
In a separate development, Shraideh said the World
Bank’s
International Finance Corporation (IFC) pledged a $400 investment loan
to fund the National Water Carrier Project.
The water carrier links the Red Sea port of Aqaba
with Amman, and envisages a water desalination plant in Aqaba with relay and
transmission stations along the way to the capital city.
A Planning Ministry statement said the loan is part
of wider pledges from countries and development partners announced last March,
with a value of more than $1.8 billion in development and investment grants and
loans to support the National Water Carrier Project.
Shraideh and the managing director and executive
vice president of the IFC, Makhtar Diop, discussed in Washington, DC the IFC’s
plans to increase its investments and support for Jordan’s private sector to
create job opportunities and achieve development.
Shraideh briefed Diop on the new investment law in
Jordan that would streamline administrative measures, noting that the law
guarantees legislative stability that would protect the rights of investors and
offer economic incentives.
In a separate meeting with World Bank President
David Malpass to discuss unemployment challenges, climate change, and water and
energy needs, Shraideh urged the international institution to increase its
support for Arab League members and the region.
