King Abdullah, the
minister of Agriculture, Khaled Al-Hneifat, opened Sunday the third International Jordanian Dates Festival, which was organized jointly by the ministry, the Jordanian Palm Dates Society, and the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation.

According to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, six countries participated in the event through 58 pavilions. In his opening speech, Hneifat said that Jordan appreciates the importance of planting various types of palm dates that have high economic returns, especially Medjool.
He estimated the number of Medjool palm trees in Jordan at 650,000, with Jordan making up 14 percent of the entire world production. He added that Jordan hopes to expand palm planting to reach a million trees.
For his part, the president of the Jordanian Palm Dates Society, Anwar Haddad, said that the annual growth rate of palm planting in the Kingdom now stands at 8 percent with a total production of 25,000 tons, 50 percent of which is exported.
