For female lifeguards at Saraya Aqaba Waterpark, the first-of-its-kind in Aqaba and the largest in the Kingdom of Jordan, being called a lifeguard is one of their proudest achievements to date. These modern-day heroes are sharing what a day in their lives looks like.

Nada Najib Rubai’ea started her career as a lifeguard back in 2018. She believes it’s an important profession that requires unique characteristics such as being responsible, confident, a fast decision maker, and above all else, feeling for others. As a lifeguard, she feels accountable for the lives of guests at Saraya Aqaba Waterpark and stays on alert during the day. Nada also encourages other women to become lifeguards and advises them to appreciate the value of their job because they will potentially become the reason behind saving someone’s life.

When it comes to Islam Samih, she is only stepping into her role as a lifeguard, yet it has been two months packed with life-learning experiences. She is an avid swimmer and believes that a lifeguard must be equipped with patience and solid endurance to withstand the work pressure, as well as having the ability to act quickly during dangerous situations.

One of the challenges Islam faced as a lifeguard was standing out in a career that might be considered more appropriate for men, yet working at Saraya Aqaba Waterpark made her appreciate her job even more.

At Saraya Aqaba Waterpark, guests can enjoy their day by the Rum Waves pool where the waterpark’s lifeguards watch over the safety of their families under the breathtaking waterfalls and next to the vast waves. Guests also looking for a relaxing day can enter a 200m long waterway, known as Al Mujib River, which features an eye-catching scenery along the way.

Faith Chepchumba Cheboi began her career as a lifeguard four years ago, following through the recommendation of a friend. “Being a lifeguard has always been my passion ever since I was a young girl. Swimming and lifesaving have always been within me. I chose this career long before I started attending classes,” she says.

For Faith, the qualities of a lifeguard must include safety first, before being ready for any rescue and abiding by of all the safety protocols. She loves working at Saraya Aqaba Waterpark and engaging with a friendly and outgoing team.

When asked about one advice she would give for ladies looking to become lifeguards, Faith adds: “Being a lifeguard is the best profession out there. If someone is ever interested in this career, I would tell them to just go for it because they will never regret it.”
