The assistant mayor of the municipal committee, Mohammad
Al-Qudah, said the campaign was aimed at eliminating illegal use of sidewalks
in downtown Ajloun, which includes taking legal action to deter offenders who
set up bollards in front of their premises in order to park their vehicles.
He said that shopkeepers and vendors do not have the right to
use sidewalks and the spaces in front of their shops in this way, and that the
municipality will fine those who violate the rules, whether they were placing
Iron barriers in front of their shops, placing refrigerators, goods for sale or
chairs and other items on the sidewalks in front of their shops. Qudah said that
the law does not allow shopkeepers to display any goods or items beyond the
door of their shop.
Such inspection campaigns were a prelude to the launching of
the recent municipal traffic plan to regulate traffic in
downtown Ajloun.
A number of citizens have recently called on the
municipality to take action to remove street encroachments in downtown Ajloun
and to remove the barriers put up by shop owners to prevent parking in front of
their shops, which endangers citizens lives and disturbs street traffic.
