During his sponsorship of the ceremony, the chairman of the board
of the commissioners, Nayef Al-Bakhit, said that the COVID pandemic had an
enormous social and economic impact on the world’s economy and Jordan’s as
well. He noted that both developed and developing countries have been affected,
and the tourism sector had been most severely affected.
Bakhit said that the resumption of tourism after declaring
Aqaba a “green” or Corona-free zone had helped to kick-start recovery and
growth, and the impact that the return of tourism has had has been visible for
all to see.
He said the damage to the world economy in the tourism
sector alone from the pandemic topped $4 trillion, and the most affected
economies were those of the developing countries. He said the World Tourism
Organization’s slogan for this year’s World Tourism Day had been designed to
support this vital sector both domestically and globally.
Bakhit said that the authority is committed to support the
tourism sector, which is a fundamental pillar in achieving sustainable
development and reducing poverty. That support includes providing all
facilities for recovery and inclusive growth, noting that the authority is
working in partnership with all sectors and local communities.
