AMMAN — The General-Director of the
Department of Antiquities Fadi Balawi has said that department is working to
present the archaeological city of Umm Al-Jimal in Mafraq as a
UNESCO World
Heritage site during 2022, pointing to “the existence of six archaeological
sites in Jordan that are already on the World Heritage List,” Al-Mamlaka TV
reported.

There are six archaeological churches that
have been recently restored within a project for UNISCO at Rihab site,” he
said.
“Umm Al-Jimal archaeological site
contains Arabic, Latin, and Greek inscriptions and the Arabic ones are examples
of the evolution of Arabic calligraphy. Marfaq is one of the most diverse
cities, however, it has been neglected archaeologically,” according to antiquities
professor at the
Hashemite University, Firdos Al-Ajlouni.
