Amman - The Higher Population Council confirmed that the increase in divorce cases in Jordan is a natural phenomenon given the rising number of married couples and new families each year, explaining that the numerical increase in divorce cases does not necessarily indicate concerning trends.

According to a statement issued by the Council today, the official data based on annual reports from the Court of Cassation for the years 2015-2023 showed that the divorce rate in Jordan remained stable, with an annual rate of approximately 2.5 divorce cases per 1,000 people. It pointed out that the ratio of marriages to divorces remained constant, with 4 marriages for every one divorce after entering into the marriage.
The report also indicated that about 27 percent of the divorce cases recorded in the Sharia courts over the past nine years were for marriage contracts only without cohabitation, which enhances the chances of remarrying for women who are divorced before the wedding. The percentage of remarriage among these divorced women was around 19 percent of recorded marriages.
The report noted that revocable divorce constituted the largest share of divorce cases, reaching 26 percent of total cases in 2023, with 45 percent of divorced women being under the age of 30.
The Council urged newly married couples to delay having their first child.
Regarding early marriage, the report indicated that the number of brides under the age of 18 is low compared to other age groups, adding that divorce cases among married women under 18 represent about 4 percent of total recorded divorce cases.
