ِِAMMAN — At 11, while attending school in
Belgium, Rand Masa’deh went
on a weeklong school trip. The school asked the children to draw everything
they saw in notebooks. That experience kindled her passion for art.

Masa’deh, however, studied marketing and management for her
university degree, a “safer” choice in our society, but her love for art made her launch her
Instagram page
Rawthentic.art in 2018, to display her artwork. One day, one of
her few followers expressed his admiration for her work and bought five
paintings; it was a crucial point in her artistic career.

“Making artwork is my purpose in life, it is like the
universe is asking me to paint. I will never get bored of it as it does not
limit my capabilities,” Masa’deh said in an interview with
Jordan News.
She perceives art as a channel that nurtures her personality
and identifies herself as an introspective artist who is intuitive, playful and
sometimes quirky.

Masa’deh likes to create work that appears raw and
unfinished. Her abstract style combines elements from many art movements,
including Art Brut, expressionism and abstract. She does not have key messages
that she focuses on in her work; the stories she tells through her work are raw
and open to interpretation.
“The truth is that each one of my pieces is a reflection of
a thought or emotion that I processed at one moment in time,” Masa’deh said.

The events in Palestine did not leave her unmoved. She felt
the need to express her feelings through her social media account. The
censorship of content related to
Palestine by these platforms and the anti-Palestine
activities conducted via social media made her wish to show her support for Palestine
through her artworks.

The work she shared on social media consisted of symbols
that many would recognize as pro-Palestinian but the west might not, like
watermelon, which became a symbol of resistance, the keffiyeh pattern, traces
of displaced and fragmented figures, the queen of the sea for Jaffa, and more.
“My messages are not limited to a specific time, they change
according to the events around me,” Masa’deh said.

She aims to produce paintings that tell the stories of the
people who commission them by offering them the opportunity to express their
feelings and revive their memories, she said.
Masa’deh painted one of her favorites, titled “Welcoming
change”, while she was going through confusing times in her life where she did
not know what she wanted to do in her life.

Her connection with the art community, of many artistic
backgrounds, help her create, keep up with new trends and learn new techniques.
She also uses Instagram to explore forms of art.
While many personal initiatives encourage art and new
talents, a challenge for artists is to earn a stable income from art, for which
the market is limited.
She wishes to be able to represent Jordan’s culture and
history and put them on the artistic world map.

Former minister of media Sakher Dudin told
Jordan News that “Masa’deh’s work clearly demonstrates that she is a promising artist not
only at the local level but internationally. She has a talent for weaving
together universal concepts about the human condition that are steeped in
psychology and spirituality coupled with an overwhelming national and patriotic
feel. A feel that is visible through her innovative use of various artistic
tools and techniques.”
