AMMAN — Scores of women and young girls gathered Thursday by the
Abdali Mall wearing embroidered
Palestinian thobes to express their rejection of the Israeli actions, particularly of what they called theft of the Palestinian heritage. The more recent catalyst for the move were recent photos on social media showing the contestants for Miss Universe 2021 wearing Palestinian traditional costumes during their stay in occupied Palestine, using the hashtag “visit Israel.”

Laila Doleh, one of the women who participated in the event, told
Jordan News that “this is the simplest thing we can do to tell the world that we will never stop defending our country and culture. With global organizations not taking action to stop the Israeli actions against our country, we feel it is our role to do something.”

Individual initiatives help raise awareness about the
Palestinian culture, she said, expressing hope that such initiatives will have some impact.
“Some people came and asked us about our costumes, and we gave them full details about Palestine and its culture. We felt that we were doing something good for our country; despite the fact that it did not take much effort, we hope it will have a great effect.”
Doleh also said that their main objective was to express their love for Palestine, which is “worth our efforts.”
“We will never get tired of highlighting and preserving our identity, and we want for the whole world to see it,” she said.
Shafaq Irshaid, another participant in the event, told
Jordan News that “each and every one can help Palestine in his/her own way; what is most important is to move on and not to remain silent”. She said that the event is a form of peaceful resistance, “which is necessary for freeing Palestine. We have to unite and stand all together to show the world that we will never be defeated.”
Wajda Khairy, yet another participant, told
Jordan News: “I insisted on participating to let the world know that despite everything, we will remain determined to win until the last breath.”
She said that Israel may try to steal Palestinians’ land, homes, culture and identity, but “it will never steal their resolve.”

Khairy also said that the women who took the initiative were not only trying to preserve their culture and identity, but also “teaching the whole world that Palestinians will always know how to resist through all possible means.”
According to Khairy, it is everybody’s duty to raise awareness about Palestine.
“We must start from home and teach our children and grandchildren how to love Palestine, and never tire of defending it,” she said.

The presence of the women in their traditional Palestinian thobes sparked wide interest and attention among the visitors to the mall.
Mohammad Abu Fazaa, present at the mall during the event, told
Jordan News that “these women are really strong and we should learn how to be like them. While some people feel weak for the slightest reasons, some others, like these women, insist on remaining steadfast despite all challenges.”
He said that the event was a great opportunity for many to come to know the truth about Palestine, “especially that tourists from all over the world usually come to malls.”
Ghaith Marwan, another onlooker, told
Jordan News that “standing by Palestine does not cost too much, it only requires you to truly love Palestine and believe in its cause.”
He said that such events would leave a great impact and should happen continuously, “especially that it is our role to stand by Palestine, irrespective of our religion, culture and nationality”.
Palestinians songs were heard and traditional Palestinian dance could be seen during the event.
