AMMAN — Six
Jordanian films were chosen to be screened at the 12th edition of
Malmo Arab Film Festival (MAFF), which will be held from May 4–9 in Sweden.

The festival’s
program will screen 56 films (31 feature films and 25 short films) produced by
14 Arab countries and co-produced with 10 Western countries.
The program competitions include:
• 25 short films.
• 12 feature fiction films.
• Eight feature documentaries.
• Four films from the Arabian Nights program.
• Four films from the special Films Worth
Watching section.
• Two films from School screenings.
• Two films in Gala screenings for the opening
and closing nights.
“Daughters of
Abdulrahman” by Jordanian director Zaid Abu Hamdan was chosen as the festival’s
opening film. It tells the story of four sisters in their struggle
against familial violence, social norms, secrets, gender discrimination, and
wearing the niqab.
Saba Mubarak,
Farah Bsaiso, Hanan Hillo, and Maryam Basha are all stars in the film.
The other five
Jordanian films will be competing in two categories: feature fiction films and
short films.
For feature fiction films, “The Alleys” by
Bassel Ghandour and “Farha” by
Drin J Sallam will be competing.
The Alleys
“The Alleys”, a
dark social drama, follows a young lover from the outskirts of East Amman
dealing with gossip and local gangsters. The film stars Emad Azmi, Baraka
Rahmani, Munther Rayahnah, Nadera Omran, Maisa Abd Elhadi, Nadeem Rimawi,
Mohammad Jezawi, Islam Al-Awadi, Jawdat Saleh, and Ibrahim Al Noabnah.
“Farha” by Drin
J Sallam reflects the Nakba through the eyes of a young Palestinian girl by
exposing the brutality of Israeli occupation and paying tribute to the power
and strength of Palestinian women throughout history. The film stars Karam
Taher, Ashraf Barhom, Ali Suliman, Tala Gammoh, Sameera Asir, Majd Eid, and
Firas Taybeh.
For short films,
“Arnoos” by Samer Battikhi and “The Mission” by Mohammad Khalil Al-Dabbas, will
be screened, in addition to a Palestinian-Jordanian film by Ahmed Saleh called
“Night”.
Jordanian jurors
In addition to the films, there will be several talented Jordanians
participating in MAFF as filmmakers, producers, festival directors, and jurors.
Director
Mohammed Al-Massad, director, will be part of the jury for the documentary
competition. At the same time, producers Aya Wuhoush and Alaa Alasad will be
jury members of the MAFF post-production platform, and the director of
Amman Film Festival, Nada Doumani, will be a juror of the MAFF development fund for
documentary film projects.
Saudi’s promising
filmmakers
In an effort to shed light on the different film talents from Saudi
Arabia, MAFF announced that
Saudi Arabia is this year’s guest of honor.
The program will
include five Saudi feature films and seven short films to be screened to
present Saudi cinema trends. In addition to the regular participation of Saudi
films and filmmakers in the festival’s official competitions and juries, a
panel discussion titled “Introduction to the Saudi Film Commission,” an
artistic night, and a special performance from a musical orchestra “Oud Huset”
will take place.
Festival guests
and filmmakers from the Arab world and the Nordic countries will be able to
attend the events.
MAFF importance
This festival is considered to be one of the largest festivals
dedicated to Arab cinema in
Europe and Nordic countries.
The MAFF aims to
bridge a gap between Arab and Nordic societies through cultural exchange,
networking, and cinema.
