He is the latest darling singer of the world pop scene. Canadian Shawn Mendes may be only 23 but the music he has released so far has won him the status of a true mega star.اضافة اعلان

Although the musician already has four studio albums to his credit, his reputation has yet to be maintained and proven further, and only time will tell how long the young talented singer and songwriter will be able to stay at the top.

Some of his songs, like Senorita and There’s Nothing Holding me Back, are in the exclusive “billions” league, whether as views count on Youtube or as play count on the Spotify audio streaming platform.

The music is catchy, irresistibly inviting you to play it back over and over. The style is young, mainstream pop. Mix a little of Ed Sheeran, a tad of Justing Timberlake, some of John Mayer, a lot of Bruno Mars, not forgetting a dash of Kanye West, and you get Shawn Mendes’ music in output.

Most of the songs will mainly appeal to the under-35 generation, but not necessarily all of them. Lost in Japan, for example, with its superb piano intro à la John Legend, is a song that is sure to please a wide audience, regardless of age.

There is a constant dose of energy in Mendes’ delivery of the songs he writes and sings, but it is always done with restraint and good taste – this is not metal/hard/gothic rock in the end!

The energy does not come only from Mendes singing style but also from the beat, the excellent drums tracks and the overall technical production.

The latter aspect of Mendes music particularly shines. Besides, you can hardly make it today on the music scene, if your production is not absolutely stellar, whatever your style may be. Technology does help a bit, but it also takes real artists and top engineers to produce great recordings.

The singer’s voice is a bit nasal, and it cannot be called beautiful in the traditional sense of the word, but it “cuts through” very well and is always expressive, inspiring, making you happy to keep listening to it.

After all Bob Dylan’s voice is nasal too, and Mendes is not a crooner like his fellow Canadian Michael Bublé for instance, and he certainly does not claim or try to be one. The tone, however, is deep, warm and easily recognizable.

Songs like Summer of Love and Treat you Better, or more recent ones like Intro and Wonder, give a good idea of Mendes’ music.

The balance between electronic sounds and acoustic ones, tilts more towards the first kind, though the global trend in pop music is rather on the acoustic side.

Teach me How to Love and Higher, two of the best tracks on Wonder, Mendes’ fourth and latest album, show all the savoir-faire of the singer.

Like many of his works, they are great dance tracks, and they also illustrate very well how clever he is at writing songs that are very different from each other.

It is worth noting that the musician writes most of his songs and plays a major role in the production stream.

The arrangements always bring a welcome variety of sonic scopes.

By any measure Shawn Mendes is a musician to follow. Fans are eagerly waiting for the release of his fifth album.
